Why did you choose to study journalism and multimedia at Point Park?

After struggling with deciding what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, I realized I could make a career out of my love for writing. I was also really inspired (in an odd way) by the movie "The Devil Wears Prada." One day it clicked that I should be a journalist and write about my passion.

I chose Point Park, because after researching and visiting the campus, I learned it had a really great communication program. I loved that most of the professors still worked in their respective field (as a reporter, news anchor, editor, etc.).

Did the Downtown Pittsburgh location influence your decision to pick Point Park?

After my first visit to campus, I fell in love with the location. I felt living in Pittsburgh would prepare me for living in New York City (another big dream and goal of mine). I also loved how close everything is to campus. I loved that the location is far enough from home for me to be completely independent, but close enough for me to go home on the weekends.

What are your key responsibilities at Whirl?

I write events for the magazine, proof the magazine, write for the website and pitch story ideas. I also help the other writers and editors with whatever they might need.

What is your favorite thing about your internship?

My favorite thing is the atmosphere in the office. There is something so uniquely different working for a magazine. The first day there was a whirlwind and I kept thinking to myself, "I can't believe I'm actually here witnessing all of this."

On the days before the magazine goes to print, everyone in the office is very quiet and focused. It's really inspiring because the people who work there are so dedicated to their craft. I also get to work with the editor-in-chief. She is such an inspiration and a role model.

How is your major's program helping you to reach your career goals?

The journalism program at Point Park has really helped me gain real-world experience by providing me with opportunities to publish stories that I write for classes, either for The Globe, The Pioneer or local newspapers. Our professors not only tell us how to write and be successful, but they help us and show us that we can be successful in reaching our goals.

Describe the faculty in your major.

The School of Communication faculty are helpful and caring. They are easy to contact and really care about my success, helping me improve my writing and reporting by giving excellent feedback and suggestions.

Why would you recommend Point Park to a prospective student?

Point Park is a great place to learn about your major and a great place to gain experience. With all of the connections around Pittsburgh and the world, students will get the knowledge and experience they crave.
