Four alumni perform at Tony Awards Monday, August 3, 2009
Ever dream of being on stage amongst some of the greatest artists in the business? Four Point Park University alumni had the chance to do just that this past June as they performed at the 2009 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall.
Anthony Hollock, a 2006 theatre graduate, performed in Hair. Hair was nominated for eight awards, and won Best Revival of a Musical. Hollock is performing in the Broadway production as a member of The Tribe.
Mike Cannon, a 2000 theatre gradate and Eric Hatch, a dance graduate, performed in the West Side Story number. Both are currently performing in the Broadway production - Cannon as Snowboy and understudy to Riff and Tony, and Hatch as Big Deal. West Side Story had four nominations this year.
Marty Lawson, a 2000 dance graduate, performed as part of the ensemble in Shrek The Musical. Shrek was nominated for eight awards.
In addition, Rob Ashford, a 1983 dance alumnus, choreographed the show's opening number. Ashford is a Tony-winning Broadway director and choreographer. He won a Tony Award for Best Choreography for Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2002; he received Tony nominations for his choreography for Cry-Baby, Curtains and the Wedding Singer. Ashford recently directed the workshop of Promises, Promises in New York, featuring Sean Hayes and Anne Hathaway; he is set to direct and choreograph the Broadway revival in the near future. Currently, Ashford is directing A Streetcar Named Desire at the Donmar Warehouse in London; Rachel Weisz plays Blanche DuBois.
