President Hennigan Reflects on the Life and Contributions of George R. White Monday, January 16, 2012
Paul Hennigan, president, Point Park University, has issued the following statement on George R. White, a Point Park University Trustee, who died on January 14, 2012:
"George R. White was a long-time supporter of Point Park University and was committed to assisting Point Park's efforts to transform itself as a university and an agent of change in Downtown Pittsburgh. He made significant contributions to Point Park through his participation on our Board, support of our Conservatory of Performing Arts, and many other ways.
A dedicated supporter of culture and the arts at Point Park and in the City of Pittsburgh, George R. White actively sought to engage, challenge and better not only the Point Park community, but also the greater community in which he lived and worked for nearly 25 years. His tireless pursuit of progressive solutions, forward-thinking strategies and collaborative partnerships defined him as a community leader and passionate investor in the future of our region.
George R. White will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege to know him and work with him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife of many years, Kathleen, who, with George, has been a valued member of our Point Park family. "
George R. White's Biographical Information:
Named a member of the Point Park University Board of Trustees in 1995, George Rowland White received his bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University, a master's degree from University of California Los Angeles, and a doctorate from Iowa State University.
White spent most of his career in industrial engineering. After spending nearly two decades with Xerox Corp. in product development and engineering, White transitioned to a career in higher education, with Harvard University and then the University of Pittsburgh Applied Research Center and School of Engineering.
Upon retirement, White took an active role as a member of the Point Park University Board of Trustees, serving on various committees and becoming the Library Center Program manager, overseeing the development and construction of Point Park's state-of-the-art library.
As a Point Park donor, White supported Point Park University's Conservatory of Performing Arts with the George Rowland White Theatre and three George Rowland White Dance Studios, in Point Park's Gold LEED certified Dance Complex built in 2007.
In addition to serving on Point Park's Board of Trustees, White has also served on the boards of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks and the Pittsburgh Opera.
