Background

Marybeth D. Irvin has spent 35 years teaching, leading and learning in three different K-12 school systems in Pennsylvania. She has held a wide variety of roles including classroom teacher, building principal, curriculum director and assistant superintendent. Her leadership has received recognition from the National Forum for Middle Grades Reform Schools to Watch in 2009, a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon and Governor's Award for Academic Excellence in 2013 and Title I Distinguished School Award in 2014. She was recently recognized with the Margaret Smith Leadership Award from the Women's Caucus of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators in 2022.

Recently retired as assistant superintendent in the Mt. Lebanon School District, Dr. Irvin has had the opportunity to lead many district-wide initiatives. Most notable among these is the recent and ongoing work on diversity, equity and inclusion. She co-led a school and community task force with a facilitator from PSBA. The resulting work included a set of goals and outcomes that she translated into a multi-year plan focussed on policy reviews, professional learning opportunities and the creation of a public DEI dashboard.

Dr. Irvin's research and study interests include teacher leadership, reflective practice, and professional learning. She was fortunate to work closely in the Professional Development School partnership between the Pennsylvania State University and the State College Area School District. This opportunity was a major factor influencing her thinking about how universities and public schools can partner to develop exceptional teachers and improve outcomes for students.

Dr. Irvin values collaboration and has built a strong network of colleagues throughout her career, by participating in conferences, PDE opportunities and via Intermediate Units. In addition, she has held leadership roles with professional education associations,  including the Pennsylvania Middle School Association (now PAMLE) and Learning Forward PA.  She planned meetings and professional learning for the Western Pennsylvania Assistant Superintendent’s Forum. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she facilitated a group of elementary assistant superintendents and curriculum directors to problem-solve and plan for the return to school. She also serves on the advisory board for UPMC Magee Girls on the Run.
