Business Management Major Tyler Hertwig '23 Lands Full-Time Job with UBS Financial Services After Internship Student Profile

Why did you choose Point Park University?

A big part of the reason I ended up at Point Park University was because of our men’s track and field team. I was also interested in being in the city and attending a university with smaller class sizes. I loved the idea of an engaging and intimate learning environment. For me, Point Park made the most sense.

How did you land your internship with UBS?

While at my previous internship at First National Bank, I had the opportunity to sit down with a professional I admired to seek out some career advice. We discussed my goals and interests, and he suggested that I try my hand at wealth management. From there, I applied around for a few internship positions in the Pittsburgh area. After going through a few interviews, I decided that I wanted to give wealth management a shot, and UBS appeared to be the best opportunity in the area.

What were your duties and responsibilities, and what did you learn from the experience?

I assisted our financial advisors, investment team and operations team in various projects and day-to-day activities. I’ve had a well-rounded experience so far dabbling in a little bit of everything and working closest with our team’s planning specialist. In assisting her, I’ve picked up a better understanding of what goes into the final product of a comprehensive financial plan. Most of my personal responsibilities revolved around preparing annual reviews, spending and streamlining various processes. I’ve been very fortunate to be surrounded by a group of really great people, all of whom I have learned a lot from.

What will you be doing in your role as an employee, and what excites you about it?

In my full-time role, I will be building off of what I’ve already been doing. The goal for me is to “be a sponge” and learn all that I can from the rockstar people that I get to go to work with every day. I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to work with this team, be of service and help our clients and their families reach their goals.

What do you like about Point Park’s business management program?

I love how accessible the professors are at Point Park. The class sizes for most of my business courses rarely ever exceeded 20 students, and our discussions were structured around constructive/critical thinking where we would workshop business ideas and real-world problems and solutions. Real entrepreneurs would also meet with us in person, share their stories and answer our questions. The loads of advice and extra value available at Point Park is endless, but you have to take the step of investing that time and asking those questions. 

Which faculty members have had a significant impact on you?

There is no shortage of names that I could list here. One of my most memorable professors has to be William Breslove, Ph.D. His discussions and take-home questions were quite the challenging puzzles to put together. Much of what we discussed regarding game theory and economic modeling I still turn back to today. Professor Hagen Starz, Patrick Mulvihill, Ed.D., and Dorene Ciletti, Ph.D., were among other professors who were always willing to take time out of class to answer any questions I had. I will always appreciate their guidance and genuine efforts.

What do you like about living and learning in Downtown Pittsburgh?

It is a great location. You’re always within striking distance of all the sports, entertainment and festivals you could imagine. The food in the city is great. It’s a very walkable city with all that you could ever ask for at your fingertips.

How would you describe the campus feel at Point Park?

When you come to Point Park, you are guaranteed to find yourself in a community of people with very different backgrounds. There’s a lot of diversity of thought here, and it makes it a fun environment to learn.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I believe that no matter how long we sit around drawing up our 30-year plan, it will never compare to the plans that God has for us. It is bigger and better than anything we would’ve created ourselves. With that in mind, appreciate the present. Get involved in things bigger than you. Work hard for the people around you. Be kind to people, even on Mondays, and love your neighbor! There are a lot of great things happening here at Point Park – don’t miss out!
