Why did you choose Point Park University?

I chose Point Park because the campus is really embedded in Pittsburgh's business district, the faculty create opportunities for students to collaborate with working professionals to gain more real-world experience in class and the University offered me a generous financial aid package.

Describe your course load and campus involvement.

I consider myself a very busy person. I am a double-major with three part-time jobs. I love working with professors and other students on personal projects that they might need help with, and I always enjoy doing work for Pioneer Records, our student-run record label on campus. Even with all these activities, I find myself living in balance, and it seems to work well for me.

Why did you decide to double-major in SAEM and Broadcasting?

I was heavily involved in all things arts in high school and originally planned on pursuing dance as a career, but I was drawn to the management side of the industry, which led me to the SAEM program. I also want to educate others on what it is like working in entertainment and artistic fields, whether as an actor, performer, manager or director. I decided to pursue broadcasting to gain the skills needed to work for a news network and share stories with the general public about how the entertainment industry works.

What is your role in Pioneer Records?

As director of operations for Pioneer Records, most of my tasks involve handling the day-to-day responsibilities of the label. I schedule and facilitate meetings. I delegate and coordinate tasks across our crew of volunteers and interns. My fellow directors – Olivia Davis, Anna Hazo and Delaney Metikosh – and I hold equal responsibilities regarding different aspects of the label. My overall responsibility is to make sure everything is running on schedule and smoothly as possible. Right now, we are preparing for Pioneer Star, a music competition through which we select a student-musician to be the label's main artist for the academic year. The Pioneer Star gets to record a three-song EP at Red Caiman Studios and has an EP release party at the Club at Stage AE. We also create custom artwork and a music video for the Pioneer Star, and we work on booking gigs for them around the city.

What are the benefits of going to school in Downtown Pittsburgh?

I appreciate having a vertical campus because I don't have to do much commuting between classes, and being able to work jobs within a block of the University helps me optimize my time. I am still exploring all the city has to offer, but my favorite hidden gem so far is Creative Coffee Supply. I love going there for a pick-me-up before class, and they've partnered with Pioneer Records to host student-led karaoke and open mic nights.

Who are your favorite professors and why?

The SAEM department as whole – especially professors Paige Beal, Ed Traversari and Robert Derda – all make it easy to get interested in everything they teach. The School of Communication also has an experienced team of educators who all have intriguing stories to tell from their careers in the industry.
