How did you land your internship with KDKA's Pittsburgh Today Live?

I've applied to a lot of different internships in the entertainment business, and when I applied to the KDKA internship, I just assumed there was no way I would get it since I didn't have a ton of experience yet. I was shocked when I got the email to set up an interview, especially when they said there were over 100 applicants and they would only be interviewing two people. During my interview, we discussed how the internship would involve working on a little bit of all of their shows, as well as marketing. After we talked about my interests and love for entertainment, Dan Braddock, my supervisor, decided Pittsburgh Today Live (PTL) would be the best fit for me since it is an entertainment show.

What are your duties and responsibilities?

My responsibilities and duties vary each day. Sometimes I write part of the show, come up with segment ideas and participate in the weekly content call with the producers and hosts. I often bring in guests and set up props. On some occasions, I even get to be on the live show or in shoots off-site that ran during the show. One of my favorite experiences was attending the "Dear Zoe" movie premiere with PTL host Daisy Jade and producer Ted Stevenson. We got to work the red carpet and interview many of the stars, producers and the writer of the movie.

What did you learn from your internship?

I gained so much experience that will forever impact my career. Some things that definitely stood out to me were how fast a television show runs. I never realized how much work goes into a production like this. Every single part of the show is timed by the second and must run on schedule. I also learned how important attention to detail is. This relates to absolutely every aspect, from exact wording for any topic being reported, to the exact placement of props and people on the show.

Why did you choose Point Park?

When I started looking at schools, I wanted to go as far as possible from Pittsburgh since I lived here my whole life. I knew I wanted to be in entertainment for a while so I was looking for schools with good entertainment programs. I ended up deciding to tour Point Park, during which I learned about the Sports, Arts & Entertainment Management program. From that moment, I knew that I had to pursue this major, and I fell in love with the University.

How is Point Park’s SAEM program preparing you for career success?

The program offers an amazing curriculum with a variety of courses in each concentration. The classes explore every aspect of SAEM so students are prepared to enter the business. I am always excited to go to my SAEM classes because I know I will learn about things that I love and care about. The SAEM professors are the most supportive and knowledgeable people I have ever met, and they have been some of my biggest fans as I start my career.

Why would you recommend Point Park to a prospective student?

I would absolutely recommend Point Park to anyone thinking of entering the sports, arts and entertainment management field. There is no other place where you can learn every aspect of the industry, live downtown in a large city and be surrounded by concert venues, theaters, sports arenas, stadiums and more. There are so many campus clubs and organizations to get involved in, which add experience to any resume.
