Student Human Resources Association Achieves Student Chapter Status from National Organization Wednesday, January 20, 2021

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has designated Point Park University's Student Human Resources Association as an affiliate student chapter. The achievement comes on the heels of the SHRM recognizing Point Park University’s human resources management program for fully aligning with SHRM’s HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. 

Club President Samantha Weber, who is a senior majoring in human resources management, said the affiliation will provide students additional benefits related to networking, internships, scholarship opportunities and career and educational resources. In the Q&A below, Weber discusses her experience with the club and Point Park's HR program.

How long have you been involved with the SHRA, and what do you like about it?

I have been involved with SHRA since my first semester of college. I started my first year as a member, and I assisted with fundraising and events. I served as treasurer in my sophomore year, and, in my junior and senior years, I have served as president. I enjoy SHRA because it helps HR students connect and form professional and personal relationships that help with our classes and careers. I also like that we get to connect with local HR professionals through the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association and Professor Sandra Mervosh's connections.

What are the club's plans for this semester?

We are currently planning our spring semester programs, but we hope to host a virtual speed networking event and partner with other organizations on campus.

What are the benefits of SHRA membership?

The major benefit of SHRA is networking with faculty, peers and professionals. Another benefit is that student members of SHRA get to learn from the events we host and attend, as well as each other.

What do you like about Point Park's HR program?

I like that the Point Park HR program is aligned with SHRM and that we are learning current information. We learn a variety of all of the topics under the HR umbrella. Additionally, the faculty have real professional experience, are personable and truly care for their students.

Anything else you would like to add?

I am extremely grateful for the time I have spent at Point Park and in SHRA. I will continue to come back after graduation to support the organization through events and anything the organization needs.
