What were your key responsibilities as a microphone operator?

I followed professional golfers around the course with a microphone to capture sound for the televised broadcast. That included the golfers' swing, conversations between the golfers and caddies and learning how to capture good sound while trying to stay out of camera shots and the golfers' line of sight.

In what ways did your Point Park undergraduate experience prepare you for this role?

My Point Park experience helped me prepare for this in multiple ways. I already had some knowledge of how live broadcasts worked and knew about the type of microphone I would be using, as well as how to capture the best sound. I also knew to not be afraid to put myself out there and make new connections with people I would meet.

What were some of your favorite memories/networking opportunities?

I loved golf growing up, so some of my favorite memories were getting to be so close to professional golfers on gorgeous courses that I grew up watching on TV — it was a very surreal experience!

Being able to spend my summer traveling for this job was also a very cool experience as I got to see several new places (I love traveling).

I also networked with people who not only work in golf, but also work in other sports and types of events in the industry. Working with them gave me many opportunities to hear interesting stories about their careers and the steps they took to get there.

Why would you recommend Point Park’s broadcasting program?

Point Park has a great broadcasting program because of how personal it is and because of the hands-on experience that you get from day one. The small class sizes give you a chance to get to know and connect with everyone, including your professors. You can receive feedback from both your professors and peers and use that to improve.

U-View is also a great resource for students. You can join with no experience and will be working on camera or behind the scenes in an environment full of peers who want to see you succeed.

What are your goals for your junior year at Point Park?

I hope to improve my skills on-and-off camera, continue to build relationships with my classmates, all while getting to know new students in the program and helping them to adjust to college life. I also plan to line up an internship at a news station for next summer.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and make connections with people, especially if you’re a new student. Everything changed for me when I came to Point Park and put myself out there by joining U-View, making new friends and connections!
