"Point Park's location in Downtown Pittsburgh was a huge advantage. The proximity to news outlets, advertising and public relations agencies and the sheer number of communications professionals willing to mentor students is unmatched."
Why did you choose Point Park University for your undergraduate and graduate degrees?
I actually transferred to Point Park during my undergraduate years to take advantage of the broadcasting program, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The networking opportunities at the university are incredible and played a major role in shaping the career I have today. When I decided to pursue my master’s degree, Point Park was the first place I looked. I was especially drawn to the dual degree programs, and the alumni tuition discount was the icing on the cake.
What did you enjoy most about each experience?
Being located in Downtown Pittsburgh was a huge advantage for both programs. The proximity to news outlets, advertising and public relations agencies and the sheer number of communications professionals willing to mentor students is unmatched. Especially during undergrad, there were moments when it truly felt like you were already working as a reporter in the city. It was an invaluable experience that prepared me for the real world.
Which faculty members and courses had a significant impact on you?
So many! One of the most impactful aspects of my experience was learning from instructors who were actively working in the fields they taught, bringing real-world insight into the classroom. A few who stand out are Gina Catanzarite, Dave Fabilli and Camille Downing. Each of them helped shape me into the professional I am today and gave me the confidence to pursue my goals.
One of my favorite graduate courses was Organizational Leadership in the MBA program. That class fundamentally shaped how I approach management — how to lead, motivate and support people. I still apply those lessons every day.
Briefly describe your career path and what you love about your current role.
I’ve had a diverse career path that has led to my current role. I’ve worked as a media relations coordinator for a professional football team, led communications for a rubber expansion joint manufacturer and I now work in agency life, which I truly enjoy.
Working with a variety of clients means every day is different and requires the ability to pivot quickly. I consider myself a perpetual student because research is my favorite part of the job. I love learning about different industries — what drives them, how to position their messaging and how to help them stand out. I’m always reading, always learning and always juggling a dozen tabs at once.
What keeps you engaged in the field of communications?
The communications field is constantly evolving, which makes it both challenging and exciting. I stay engaged by being actively involved in professional organizations such as the Public Relations Society of America Pittsburgh (PRSA), the American Marketing Association (AMA) and the Media Association of Pittsburgh (MAP).
Networking was critical during my time in college and it’s just as important now. Some of the best insights come from simply talking with other professionals in the field. Staying involved keeps me sharp, pushes me to grow and has also led to some wonderful friendships!
What advice do you have for a prospective student considering Point Park?
I would encourage prospective students to visit campus — take a tour, talk to current students and meet professors in your intended major. That firsthand experience makes a meaningful difference. I may be a little biased, but the communications program is truly top-notch!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
It took me 12 years to return and complete my master’s degree, and I’m a firm believer that it’s never too late. That experience opened a new chapter in my life, including the opportunity to teach the next generation of communications professionals, which has given me a renewed sense of purpose.
I’m always happy to connect with current students, recent graduates or anyone looking to network.
