From Point Park to PNC Park: Sports Communication Club Students Provide Live-Action Coverage of Pioneers' Baseball Game Wednesday, April 22, 2026
Point Park University's Sports Communication Club students gained industry experience by providing live-action coverage of the Pioneers' baseball game at PNC Park on April 9.
"Our students and Chris Thomas, associate athletic director of sports information, did a remarkable job with our baseball game at PNC Park," said Scott Swain, vice president of athletics. "Many of the students expressed their gratitude for this opportunity and said it was 'like their Super Bowl.'"
Twenty-three students staffed the game against the California (PA) Vulcans in a variety of roles, some of which included:
- Working the four-camera 4K webstream of the game (the broadcast featured a three-person announcing team and a full production).
- Creating scoreboard graphics for the Jumbotron.
- Serving as the public address announcer of the game.
- Capturing photos and video of the game.
Sports communication major Tyler Beck '26 served as the public address announcer for this game and for Point Park Athletics games.
"I would recommend the Sports Communication Club because of the amount of first-hand experience that students get at the NCAA Division II level," said Beck. "Just this year, we have covered two NCAA Division I games, the Point Park baseball game at PNC Park and broadcast more than 50 events this season. Plus, students worked on the Mountain East Conference basketball tournament with a production company earlier this semester."
Kyla Pothier '27, a public relations, advertising and social media major, has also gained real-world experience by joining the club.
"Point Park has provided me with so many opportunities, and I would not be as advanced in my career without Point Park Athletics and the faculty in the School of Communication," Pothier said. "Because of the Sports Communication Club, I've been able to work with a magazine for the 2026 NFL Draft, intern with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, work with Carlow Athletics, photograph this game and so much more."
Broadcasting major Carson Burgh '29 was a photographer and videographer at the game.
"Having the chance to be a photographer and videographer at PNC Park is an example of how Point Park opens countless doors and gives you opportunities that some people couldn't dream of," said Burgh. "Chris Thomas does a fantastic job at running the Sports Communication Club as a professional student media group."
"My college experience prepared me to photograph the baseball game by helping me feel confident in an atmosphere such as PNC Park," said Ayden Miller '28, a broadcasting major with a minor in photography. "I would most definitely recommend the Sports Communication Club because opportunities like this are a great way to gain experience in the field."
Under the leadership of Coach Loren Torres, the Pioneers beat the Vulcans 7-2 at PNC Park.
