Caleb Mathura '22 Performing in MEAN GIRLS the Musical Alumni Profile

Why did you choose Point Park University for musical theatre?

I chose Point Park University because of the well-rounded musical theatre program that I believed created triple threats. I also loved the idea of living in a bigger city. Point Park’s campus is in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh, making it the perfect place for me to adjust to city life before moving to New York.

Tell us about your work with the new musical Come Fall in Love.

During second semester of my senior year, I received an offer to join the New York City workshop of the new musical Come Fall in Love. This musical was choreographed by alumnus Rob Ashford and assistant directed by Stephen Sposito, who was the guest director for Pippin my sophomore year. The faculty at Point Park were so accommodating and supportive of this opportunity. Following the workshop, I did the pre-Broadway tryout at The Old Globe in San Diego, Calif., and landed a role in the ensemble. The production plans to transfer to Broadway during the 2022-23 season.

How did you land your current role in MEAN GIRLS and what are your key responsibilities?

My audition process for MEAN GIRLS was entirely virtual, since I was in San Diego and unable to travel back to New York. I had been in callbacks for the Kevin G. understudy a few months prior, so the team had seen me in person before.

I had the privilege of working with the incredible Nell Benjamin on Come Fall in Love in San Diego, who was also the lyricist for MEAN GIRLS. Being familiar with her style of writing really helped me navigate Kevin’s material. In the show, Kevin prides himself on being captain of the North Shore Mathletes — a very “chill, dope, crew” as he likes to put it! He’s a really fun character, and I love how he has zero shame. He’s proud of his talents and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. For a high schooler, he was ahead of his times.

How have you grown professionally in this role?

I’ve never rapped in a show before, and being able to develop that skill set is incredibly exciting, especially when more and more shows are utilizing that form of artistic expression. There’s also a lot of dancing in the show, and I honestly believe that without the dance training Point Park provided me, I would not have gotten this job. 

Additionally, physically adjusting to performing eight times a week is a new experience, but the daily rigor of our classes at Point Park made that transition easier. 

What advice do you have for prospective Conservatory of Performing Arts students?

Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. True growth occurs when you are uncomfortable. Find your weak spots and hone in on them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I would say to try and remember to keep your head down, stay focused, work hard and keep your eyes on the prize. Everything will fall into place!
