Point Park University Introduces Bachelor of Arts in Dance Education Certification Pre-K Through 12 Thursday, February 22, 2024
“In the state of Pennsylvania, dance has traditionally been taught in PreK-12 schools by teachers holding certification in other areas. With this degree, we are creating an opportunity for a direct path to certification that’s relevant, in-depth and content specific.”
Beginning in the fall of 2024, Point Park University’s renowned Conservatory of Performing Arts and its innovative School of Education will introduce a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Education Pre-K through 12 Certification.
The new degree program is aimed at dance students who want to become a certified dance educator.
“In the state of Pennsylvania, dance has traditionally been taught in PreK-12 schools by teachers holding certification in other areas," said Kamryn York, Ed.D., assistant professor of education. "With this degree, we are creating an opportunity for a direct path to certification that’s relevant, in-depth and content specific.”
"Students enrolled in this program will have the opportunity to reflect upon and deepen their teaching practice while learning practical skills that can be directly applied to the classroom setting," said Colleen Hooper, Ph.D., associate professor of dance.
Graduates of the program will be able to meet the needs of future students as they learn additional dance methodologies paired with core education courses aimed at strengthening their understanding of child development, diverse learning styles, assessment, communication and differentiated learning practices.
"Providing training and education for students who want to become certified in dance education in Pre-K through 12 would not be possible without productive collaborations between the Conservatory and our outstanding School of Education," said Garfield Lemonius, M.F.A., dean and artistic director of the Conservatory of Performing Arts.
Studies have shown dance plays a pivotal role in the social and emotional development of children. Certified dance educators bring their specific content knowledge and expertise to build student competencies as emotional awareness, character development and relationship skills.

"You are changing lives and you want to make sure your advice, knowledge, demeanor and quality of teaching are your best. Anyone can teach dance, but to truly inspire and create young artists is a special gift."
