"Most, if not everything I learned at Point Park helped me become the artist I am today. I took everything that I learned from the wonderful faculty, and I ingrained it into all of the work I perform and create."

Tianna Davis '22

Why did you choose Point Park University?

Initially, I did not know about Point Park's musical theatre program. It was my mother who told me about the school and how she believed that it would be a perfect fit. When I toured the campus for the first time, I immediately knew this was the place for me. I wanted to be in a city and I wanted individualized training. I wanted to pursue a career in musical theatre and train with the wonderful members of the dance faculty with a dance minor.

You were selected for the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. Tell us more about it and how you secured your spot as a composer and lyricist.

The BMI Musical Theatre Workshop is a place for new musical theatre lyricists, composers and librettists to collaborate and learn about their crafts. It is a place of creativity and a place to nourish your talent and learn new ways of thinking. I heard about BMI during a meeting with Composer Jeanine Tesori. I applied to the program and I was offered an audition spot. I presented my music to the panel and the rest is history.

What will you be doing/learning during the workshop?

I am a composer and a lyricist, but when you apply to the program as both, you are accepted for only one discipline. Because I was accepted as a composer, I will be collaborating with different lyricists over the course of the year. We will present new songs and works and receive feedback for each class. I am excited to learn more about orchestration and the collaborative experience.

How will this experience enhance your career?

This workshop will give me tools to collaborate with other writers and it will help me cultivate my talent. In addition, this experience will help me network and meet new creators and professionals in the industry. The name BMI itself will open doors for me and it will give me the chance to present my work and my artistry.

How did the education and hands-on training you had at Point Park prepare you for this role?

Most, if not everything I learned at Point Park helped me become the artist I am today. I learned how to write librettos from the classes I took on the structure of musicals. I learned how the music influences the lyrics and vice versa in my Acting through Song class. I used my dance background to influence how I feel and interpret the music I wrote. I took everything that I learned from the wonderful faculty, and I ingrained it into all of the work I perform and create.

What advice do you have for prospective Conservatory of Performing Arts students?

My advice would be to stop worrying about being perfect. Make mistakes, and when you fall, get up and try again. Life does not have to be perfect to be beautiful. Your path will look different than others, but you will always end up where you are meant to be.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I am grateful for all of the faculty and training that I received at Point Park. I have many goals. I want to be a composer/lyricist, and have one of my musicals on Broadway. I also want to perform on the Broadway stage and do TV/film. I believe that I can make all of my dreams come true because of the incredible training I received at Point Park!
