Heidi Schlegel Receives Conservatory's Outstanding Graduating Senior Award Wednesday, May 8, 2013

"Heidi was incredibly dedicated to her courses, her program, to her fellow students and crew members. She started the cinema program with a focus and determination beyond her years and has grown as a filmmaker and a person," said Nelson Chipman, chair of the cinema arts department.
What was your reaction when you found out you received this award?
I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. I feel honored to be able to represent the cinema arts department, which is evolving into one of the most reputable film programs in the country. Hard work and diligence can at times be overwhelming, but it is moments like these where it proves that it will always pay off.
What was the most rewarding experience you had as a student?
To say that I have had one rewarding experience at Point Park would be an understatement. I have had more gratifying moments over the past four years than some people will have in 10 years. I chose to capture every moment that came my way and know that each experience, whether it was good or bad, ultimately helped lead me to where I am today. The knowledge I've gained and the relationships I've built will always be a part of me.
What advice do you have for today's students?
The biggest advice I can give someone who is in the cinema and digital arts program is to step outside of your comfort zone and work on projects outside of the University. Although University projects are very beneficial, interacting and meeting new people will only make you a better filmmaker. Whether you spend your time with internships or independent projects, a filmmaker should always be working on something. Laziness will never be accepted.
Why would you recommend the cinema arts program at Point Park?
I would recommend the program at Point Park because of the professors. Our professors have real-world experience and truly care about each student and their projects. They invest in their students as if we were family or lifelong friends. Our professors challenge us, provide constructive criticism and acknowledge all of our time and efforts.
What are your career goals?
As a new graduate of Point Park (which feels really odd to say), I will be pursuing a career in the major motion picture or television field. I want to be an assistant director and am open to traveling to wherever an opportunity presents itself. Regardless of where life takes me, I want to find a job that challenges me and helps me grow as an individual.
