From Peru to Point Park: Peruvian Delegates Learn from Education Faculty and Students Wednesday, December 18, 2019

The School of Education at Point Park University recently welcomed executive-level government officials and academic leaders from various higher education institutions in Peru to campus for a training session focused on improving workforce development.
Professor Vincenne Revilla-Beltrán, Ph.D., led the event, discussing instructional methods, applications and best practices related to workforce development.
“The Peruvian delegates were sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and GlobalPittsburgh recommended including Point Park University on their itinerary. They wanted to learn how our M.A. in adult learning and training graduate program prepares teachers to use adult instructional best practices for effective workforce development," Revilla-Beltrán said.
“It’s very important to learn to work with diverse adult student populations,” she added.
Panelists at the training session included:
- Tina Cafasso ‘19, M.A. in adult learning and training alumna, doctoral student in the Ed.D. in leadership and administration program and adjunct English professor for Butler County Community College
- Rachel Hienz ‘89, journalism and mass communication alumna, M.A. in adult learning and training graduate student and faculty member for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- Vince Kwisnek, president of the Pittsburgh Chapter of Association for Talent Development
"Thanks to the rigorous curriculum provided in the Master of Arts in adult learning and training program, I was able to attain a position in workforce development. By sharing how I correlate andragogical theory and concepts learned in the MALT program to my daily work, I was able to demonstrate to the delegates the success of this program,” Cafasso explained.
Additional areas of discussion included an analysis of the technical education model in the United States; exploring how the private sector, government and communities promote small businesses; discovering innovative methods to teaching and adapting curriculum to labor market needs and understanding how technical schools work with universities to offer transfer credits and partnerships.
“It was great to collaborate with Point Park, the other presenters and the Peruvian delegation! We hope that this is the first event of an ongoing partnership,” Kwisnek said.
Revilla-Beltrán added: “Our Point Park M.A. in adult learning and training graduates have outstanding careers in workforce development and demonstrated how they apply adult learning theory to apprenticeship programs, workforce training and employee professional development. Point Park hopes to continue collaborations with the Peruvian delegates.”
