The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world's largest association devoted to human resource management, presented a 2020-2021 Honorable Mention Award to the Point Park University SHRM Student Chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members.

"We are beyond proud to have our accomplishments recognized by such an esteemed organization as SHRM," said Mara Van Thiel, human resource management major and president of Point Park's SHRM Student Chapter. "The past year was certainly a challenge – hosting meetings and events and trying to connect with students across campus without actually being able to be together. Having a virtual school year was a hurdle, but this award shows that we didn’t let that slow us down."

The SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award program encourages the development of more effective student chapters and distinguishes outstanding activities and projects.

The Point Park SHRM Student Chapter's inaugural semester in Spring 2021 included:

  • A virtual panel discussion titled, "Transitioning from College to the Workforce"
  • Participation in SHRM and PHRA's social media Gender Equity Pledge
  • Attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania's SHRM Student Chapter National Labor Relations Board event
  • Fundraising activities

“The members of our SHRM student chapters represent the next generation of HR leaders, and it’s critical to highlight the instrumental role they play in SHRM’s success,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, SHRM president and CEO. “The hard work of Point Park University's SHRM student chapter shows the future of the profession is, indeed, in good hands. I applaud their accomplishments and ability to foster innovative programming, development and interest in HR as we navigate changing workplaces.”

"This is a testament to the students' dedication to the field of HR and Point Park University," said Sandra Mervosh, M.S., SHRM-SCP, SPHR, assistant professor and director of the human resources management program.

Point Park's human resources management degree fully aligns with the HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates of the SHRM. Additionally, Point Park is an HR Certification Institute (HRCI) Academic Provider. Learn more about the program on our website.
