Earlier this month, students in the sports, arts, entertainment, and music business (SAEM) program had the opportunity to learn about some of the changes developing in Pittsburgh's live entertainment scene.
The annual SAEM Emerging Trends event took place at the Professional Career and Readiness Center on April 6, giving professionals and students a chance to socialize and discuss new trends in their industries. Topics featured during this year's event included the 2026 NFL Draft, mentorship in the music business through Grammy U and more.
"The SAEM Emerging Trends event was an incredible experience for our students," said Robert Derda, M.S., chair of the SAEM Program. "From insightful panel discussions to meaningful networking opportunities with SAEM alums and entertainment professionals, our students walked away from the day-long event inspired, better connected, and more confident about their future paths."
After the panel discussions, students attended an hour-long speed networking session hosted by the SAEM Club. Over 40 students attended these sessions, which featured Point Park alumni and representatives from across Pittsburgh's live event industry. Just outside the door, students could share resumes with 19 major employers from the area, such as the Carnegie Museums, Pittsburgh Penguins and Live Nation Entertainment.
In addition to the networking opportunities, several industry professionals were honored at the event for the shadowing opportunities they provided for Point Park students. During the ceremony, the following professionals received awards for their support of students:
- Bailee Gazdag – Women Who Rock Brand Experience Manager
- Myah Olson – Pittsburgh Steelers Community Relations Coordinator
- Maddy Sedberry – Live Nation Carolina’s Production Coordinator
-
Carly Thompson – Pittsburgh Playhouse Events Manager
"For many students, these connections offer their first real exposure to the business world," said Paige Beal, MBA, a professor in the SAEM program. "We are incredibly grateful for the time and passion these professionals dedicate to paving the way for the next generation of sports, arts, entertainment and music business pioneers!"
