"I really liked how dynamic Point Park's broadcasting program was. I acquired so many different skills in all of my classes, some of which included editing, writing, interviewing techniques and videography."
Tell us about your current role at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium.
As the digital communications manager, I oversee all social media channels for the Zoo as well as manage the website. I also document all aspects of the Zoo, from new habitats to animal enrichment to events.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Each day is different, which keeps things exciting in my current role. One day, I am doing website updates and planning marketing strategies, and the next, I am coordinating a birthday, or as we call it, a hatch-day celebration for a macaroni penguin.
I love connecting with the keepers, aquarists and veterinarians because I get to document their days with a camera. The most fulfilling part so far has been the Sea Turtle Second Chance program release, where I had the opportunity to document the journey to release rehabilitated sea turtles in Florida. It was a long drive, but being able to release them back into the ocean was a moment I will remember for the rest of my life.
How did Point Park’s broadcasting program prepare you for this role?
I really liked how dynamic the program was. I acquired so many different skills in all of my classes, some of which included editing, writing, interviewing techniques and videography.
My classes around semiotics and media ethics really prepared me for being mindful of all the ways the public can view an animal. It is important to be cognizant of conservation and how the Zoo serves as an educational resource for wildlife. While we can all admire a gorilla playing with fun-themed enrichment and treats, it is also important to equally engage the public with conservation messaging.
The broadcasting-centered courses also prepared me for my public speaking responsibilities, and I love being able to educate audiences on wildlife.
Which faculty members and courses had a significant impact on you?
Some of my favorite courses at Point Park were Media Ethics and Responsibilities with Dr. Aimee Dorsten, Special Topics Broadcasting with Elizabeth Speed, my psychology electives with Sam Crummie and Dr. Bob, and, of course, the International Media class and trip to Spain with Dr. Robin Cecala. Being able to apply my skills while diving headfirst into the culture of Spain gave me a fresh perspective on communications. And Kyle Archer, for keeping me inspired.

Tell us about your internship with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
During my junior year, I was a video production intern with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This gave me professional experience in videography and unforgettable behind-the-scenes opportunities with my favorite sports team in Pittsburgh. Filming practice and interviews with the players prepared me for my career and gave me a deep sense of accomplishment as I entered my senior year.
What did you like about living and learning in Downtown Pittsburgh?
So many exciting things are just a walk or a quick bus ride away when you are a student Downtown. While it does get noisy at times, you can never say you have nothing to do. Being in the heart of the city means constant inspiration, and it is important for students to get out of their comfort zone and interact with diverse cultures and experiences.
Why would you recommend Point Park to a prospective student?
If you are looking for a unique college experience and love the culture of Pittsburgh, I would recommend Point Park. It is a big-city school with a small-town feeling. You are bound to make lifelong friends while studying what you are passionate about and going on adventures around the city together.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Explore as much as you can! You will be surprised by how many places you can go to off campus to get your homework done.
If you are looking to reconnect with nature, it is a great time to visit the Zoo. I highly recommend a walk around to visit all of the animal residents to decompress. Plus, Point Park students receive free admission to the Zoo by showing their valid student ID at the entrance. Come check us out!
