“The M.A. in PR and advertising at Point Park has a very strong emphasis on hands-on learning. We bring in real-world clients for many of our projects and we connect our students with a strong network of professionals in the field to guide them through their studies and prepare them for the next stage of their career.”

Point Park University will offer a 36-credit Master of Arts in Public Relations and Advertising starting in Fall 2020. This program, which is currently a specialization as part of the Master of Arts in Media Communication, is now a standalone master's degree.

“The M.A. in PR and advertising at Point Park has a very strong emphasis on hands-on learning,” said Camille Downing, M.A., lecturer. “We bring in real-world clients for many of our projects and we connect our students with a strong network of professionals in the field to guide them through their studies and prepare them for the next stage of their career.”

Part of that real-world experience is offered through Wood Street Communications, an initiative to help connect nonprofits seeking assistance with communications services with Point Park students.

“Point Park’s Wood Street Communications – which creates PR and advertising pieces and campaigns for area nonprofits that can’t afford to contract with an agency or to hire their own PR representatives – is on campus, offering students a laboratory  environment in which to create professional work products for their portfolios,” said Steve Hallock, Ph.D., professor of journalism and director of the School of Communication graduate programs.

In addition, students in the program have the opportunity to build a professional portfolio through internships facilitated by Point Park’s location in Downtown Pittsburgh

“Part of the program’s practical components is the opportunity to do internships for course credit,” Hallock said. “The Downtown Pittsburgh campus lends to such opportunities because of its close proximity to PR and advertising agencies.”
