How did you land the operations communication specialist position at Sheetz?
It's funny how things in life fall into place. I work as a salesperson at the Sheetz in Cresson, Pa., and I applied for three different internships in the brand department. I received an email from my current boss for a phone interview and was offered this temporary, full-time position. My boss, who recommended me for this job, thought that the knowledge I obtained from my sales experience - as well as my courses at Point Park - have better prepared me for this role during the summer (the woman who permanently holds this position began her maternity leave the same week that I moved home from my spring semester at Point Park).
Tell us about the work you are doing in this position?
As the operations communication specialist, I manage the online forum on our internal website, write and edit content to send out to all of the stores and write for the company newsletter. In addition, I attend operations meetings and work on identifying and resolving our employees' concerns/problems.
Why did you decide to double major in public relations and advertising and political science?
I decided to double major because I needed the additional credits. I had a lot of transfer credits that I earned in high school which allowed me to take more courses at Point Park. I'm interested in both majors and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to earn two degrees in four years instead of one.
How have classes in both of these majors helped you in this position?
The classes I am taking at Point Park have thoroughly prepared me for this position. My PR classes have helped with the communication part of my job, while my political science classes have helped me understand the ethics and leadership part of my job.
What are you looking forward to most in your upcoming junior year at Point Park?
I am looking forward to taking what I have learned in this position at Sheetz this summer and apply it to what I am learning in the classroom at Point Park; furthermore, I will be looking for a fall internship somewhere in Downtown Pittsburgh.
What are your career goals?
I have always dreamed of becoming a family law attorney. However, I have underestimated how much I would love the communications industry. All I know right now is that I love what I am learning in both of my majors, and I am excited to see where it takes me. I will not stop until I am at the top, whether that is in a court room or a corporate office, I want to be there. I have a passion for helping others and writing. My main goal is to make a difference in someone's life someday.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and how well Point Park has prepared me for it. I could not have asked for a better boss or coworkers. I am so excited to see where this leads me to next in life!
