Erika Mangual

How did you land your position with The Bank of New York Mellon right after graduation?

I was a Pittsburgh Promise Executive Scholar for the Class of 2012. Around Point Park graduation time, a job opportunity with BNY Mellon was presented to Pittsburgh Promise scholars via email blast. Interestingly enough, I did not receive the initial position I applied for, but because the employees I interviewed with took an interest in me, they informed me about other job openings within the company. After interviewing for a couple of different roles, I landed my first role within the control management department at BNY Mellon as an embedded control analyst.

Tell us about the work you do.

As an embedded control analyst, I am responsible for ensuring that the business lines supported by the Control Management department are following documented controls and comply with laws and regulations. One of the coolest attributes of my job is that I have the opportunity to work closely with my global counterparts who reside in the United Kingdom and India.

In what ways has Point Park prepare you for the business world?

Point Park University prepared me for the business world in many ways. However, I want to hone in on the professors, and give a huge shout out to Professors Soren Hogsgaard and Ed Scott who contributed to my success tremendously.

The majority of Point Park’s professors have worked in the professions they are teaching. Therefore, it was encouraging to know that their knowledge was coming from their first-hand experiences. Also, the professors at Point Park truly invest in their students. Not only did I feel valued, but I knew I was going to be an asset in the world, and contribute to it in a positive way.

Additionally, Point Park’s location made it convenient for me to obtain internships with corporate companies in the Pittsburgh area.

What are your favorite Point Park memories?

Point Park holds four years worth of memories that are near and dear to my heart. However, one of my favorite memories would be participating in Strong Women Strong Girls. Strong Women Strong Girls allowed me to truly make a difference within my community through impacting the lives of young girls while enhancing my time management, organization and communication skill sets.

Additionally, the relationships I built with my professors and peers while attending Point Park have truly been crucial, as they have contributed to my current successes. I will forever be grateful for those relationships.

What career advice do you have for our business management majors?

My career advice for business management majors is to be open minded to every opportunity and never tell an opportunity no, let the opportunity tell you no. Being open minded about opportunities that were presented to me and saying yes to opportunities is the very reason I am in my current role at BNY Mellon.

Remember that no matter what role you are in, or what company that you’re at, there is something to be learned and you will build transferable skill sets in the process that will get you to the place you want to be.

What are your long-term career goals?

As a young professional early in my career, I am keen on continuing to build transferable skill sets as well as building meaningful, working relationships with my peers. Additionally, I plan to further my education — most likely obtaining an M.B.A. However, I’m still in the process of trying to determine the exact path I am going to take.
