NYC Trip Has SAEM Students Exploring Career Paths, Networking with Alumni in the City Thursday, March 24, 2016
Sports, arts and entertainment management, School of Communication and Honors Program students had a memorable trip to New York City March 2-6 making professional connections, exploring career opportunities and enjoying shows and events in the city.
SAEM Assistant Professor Teresa Gregory, CFRE, and Helen Fallon, professor of journalism, accompanied the students to the Big Apple, introducing them to various professionals working in the arts and entertainment industries including Point Park alumni.
"What really interested me about going on this trip was the chance to go to New York City with a trusted professor, explore career paths and visit with industry professionals and our alumni," explained Kimmy Prelosky, senior SAEM student and executive director of the Campus Activities Board.
Highlights of this student trip included a behind-the-scenes tour of Madison Square Garden, a Broadway show (Something Rotten!), a Fall Out Boy concert, a networking reception with Point Park alumni working in the city and a private meeting with Sree Sreennivasan, chief digital officer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Additionally, SAEM students met with the following professionals:
- Rich Bittner, Amy Cannon, Danielle Kramer and Ryan Stana, Point Park alumni working for RWS & Associates
- Lauren Ferris, director of internships, and Meredith Savage, SAEM alumna and VIP services coordinator, Madison Square Garden
- Ginny Louloudes, executive director of ART New York
- Catherine Rotella, lifestyle marketing manager at 'stache media, a division of SONY Music Entertainment
- Rachel Winkler, SAEM alumna and development operations assistant for the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts
"This trip was an amazing opportunity for students to talk with recent SAEM alumni and other Point Park graduates working in the city, as well as industry leaders with a wealth of experience and advice for newcomers," remarked Gregory.
"My favorite networking experience was with Ginny at ART/New York because she really wanted to know what she could do to help us. She gave me tips and advice that I will cherish for the rest of my life and knowledge that I will take with me on every interview," said Jennifer Mardirossian, a senior SAEM major with minors in accounting and business management.
Prelosky added: "Our trip made me feel at ease about my job search. I came out of it feeling that the SAEM program has prepared me to be a well-rounded individual with a strong work ethic. I can see myself in many facets of the industry and how our comprehensive program can be put to use."
